AN EASY WAY TO DEVELOP CALLUSES
In guitar playing it is very important to have calluses developed on your fretting hand fingers. If you do not have calluses developed, then playing guitar will be very uncomfortable for you. The conventional wisdom for developing calluses is just to play guitar and let it come to you naturally as you play, and the longer you play the stronger your calluses will develop. However, what most guitar players don’t realize is that there IS a quicker way to develop callus so you don’t have to feel pain in your fingers.
The way you develop callus is very simple, just lay all you fingers down on the thicker, wounded, strings (strings 4, 5 or 6) and slide your hand up and down the guitar! Your probably wondering if this really works, and the answer is YES! The thing about this technique is that although it’s incredibly simple and obvious, it’s not really common to see this idea. So say you are having trouble fretting notes with you pinky, just slide that pinky back and forth for 10-20 seconds on the 4th, 5th, or 6th string a few times per practice session for the next week or so and then you will realize that you don’t need as much tension to fret down the notes on the guitar! This same concept can be applied to when you have to start barring chords and using your whole index finger or any other finger in order to making barring chords easier and painless.
WARNING: Be careful using this idea! If you do this technique for longer then 10-20 seconds at a time in the hopes that you will develop callus faster you are WRONG. If you do this you CAN cut your fingers! So be careful using this idea, it is really effective in speeding up the development of your calluses, but can cause injury and require you to take a few days off from practicing/playing your guitar, which is what we want to avoid!
